How to write your GilMUN position paper
(Due before the conference)

The position paper is a vital part of any Model UN experience, as it allows the chairs to see the work you have put in to get an in-depth understanding of your country's stance on the topic. For GilMUN, we have some specific formatting rules that should be followed on the paper. First, Your position paper must be one page long, in 12 point font, and single-spaced. In the heading of the paper, make sure you include your committee name the topic, the country you are representing, your name, and the name of your school. Remember, your goal during the committee is to represent your nation or entity, so you should refrain from using personal pronouns such as “I” or “we” in your paper if you are in a General Assembly or Regional Body. This means that you should refer to your nation in the third person. However, there is an exception to this rule is if you are in our crisis committee as you will be representing a specific individual. Lastly, while we ask you to cite any sources used, there is not specific formatting required for the citations. We recommend breaking down the position paper into 3 distinct paragraphs:

1. First Paragraph - Domestic Stance

      a. Introduce your nation's history with the topic. How have they voted in previous           resolutions about the issue? How have they dealt with topics of a similar nature?

2 Second Paragraph - International Stance

      a. What steps has the UN taken to solve this issue? How successful have they been?       Have any other countries had solutions to the issue the UN could implement? Does your country agree or disagree with these solutions?

3. Final Paragraph - Solutions and Conclusion

     a. What solutions would you propose for the issue? How will they be implemented and why will they be successful? End with a strong conclusion that summarizes your nation's stance on the topic

While this three paragraph formatting act as a solid guideline, do not be afraid to be loose with these rules. If you have an effective and creative plan for how to cover your topic in the position paper, implement it!

A submitted position paper is required in order to be eligible for an award during the conference. While the due date of submission is not until 12:00 the night before the conference, if you have your position paper submitted 3 weeks ahead of the conference we will try our best to respond with feedback to your submitted paper. We look forward to seeing your submitted position papers!
